J G 4 months agoWORST GYM EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD. I have had it with the members at the Oakland gym so I cancelled. If you come to this gym this is what you’ll see. People love to use multiple machines at once. They’ll use one machine then put a towel over it so no one can use it then use a different one. Every morning there is this lady that just put towels all over every machine. I’ve also seen other people do it and it’s so annoying. And when you ask if you can work in they are so rude. Awful rude gym members that don’t care about anyone else but themselves. I think it’s so CRAZY that you walk in wanting to do a simple workout but are greeted with towels on every machine and people not using them… do better
Wilmer Rengifo 3 months agoI'm coming from the 24 Hour Fitness in San Leandro, and honestly, the change is night and day. The service is great, the place is super clean, and it has all very modern machines. Overall, it's very good; it's small but well-organized, and for my tastes and needs, it's perfect.
Emmy Bamberger 3 months agoI’ve been going to fitness SF - Oakland since i moved to Oakland from SF. I love it!!! There’s always going to be creepy men at gyms, but genuinely this has the least amount (still some). The cis white men are always the worst, right? But here there’s tons of diversity and respectful men and LOTS of girlie pops! I’d been having some health problems which lead me to needing help with a personal trainer. I found Mae, and I’m so grateful. Initially i was doing okay with our training sessions but then i started to decline and Mae insisted that we pause training and i see a doctor. That lead to a lot of my health questions being answered. Most trainers would have taken my money and not worried about all the pain i was in. Not Mae, she knew something wasn’t right and advocated i get the help i need. Eventually i was able to get back to training with Mae after lots of physical therapy. When i told Mae about my new chronic illness diagnosis, she immediately did her research and changed our fitness routine to work better with my body. Slowly but surely I’m getting stronger and stronger. As a chronic illness LGBTQ+ girlie, i feel comfortable at my gym and especially with Mae.
EL. 5 months agoFirst off, I’m really happy to have this gym in my neighborhood. The location is ideal for me — it’s a quick walk from my apartment, so parking is never an issue. I was pleasantly surprised by how much equipment fits into the space, and despite that, it doesn’t feel overly cramped. The members are respectful and diverse, which makes for a comfortable workout environment. The staff has been solid overall — many of the front desk employees are friendly, and the cleaning staff is consistently around keeping the gym tidy and functional. The main reason I’m deducting a star is the temperature. I joined last September, and on sunny or warm days the gym can get uncomfortably hot, especially upstairs. It sometimes feels like there’s AC running downstairs, but the upper level doesn’t feel well-ventilated. While there are large fans throughout the gym, they’re not always effective — some get monopolized, and since they’re mounted high up, they’re impossible to turn on if you’re shorter. I haven’t experienced peak summer here yet, but if it was this warm in September, I’m a bit concerned about how it will feel in the hotter months.
Lar Bryer 7 months agoFitness SF in Oakland is a smaller gym absolutely stuffed with equipment. It’s well kept up. Machines all work consistently and they are always cleaning. Members span every racial, gender, and age demographic. I’ve never witnessed attitude thrown at other members. It’s size doesn’t allow for a pool, studios for group exercise, hot tubs, saunas, or basketball, handball, squash, or pickleball courts, so it’s limited to cardio and resistance training. It’s the staff that make it truly outstanding though. We’ve been working with Jeremy Jouanne for about a year. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, kind, caring, accepting, creative, interesting, and reliable. He’ll push us just enough to keep us challenged, but he’ll always keep an eye to safety. That’s important for two septuagenarians. We’ve had memberships at a variety of gyms and clubs over the years. Fitness SF-Oakland offers a fantastic value. I’d love to see them expand to include group exercise areas, but they otherwise meet our needs perfectly.
